Bookstores in Israel That Sell English-Language Materials

Sunday- Friday 9:30 - 13:00 and Monday, Thursday 16:00 - 19:00
Buying books new

The two leading national chains of bookstores in Israel, Steimatzky and Tzomet Sfarim, sell English books.

You can find a list arranged by location of bookstores that sell new books in English here.

Ludwig Mayer in Jerusalem has many books in English, particularly scholarly material.

Wiz Kids, located in Raanana, describes itself as "Israel's only English bookstore."

Buying books in second-hand bookstores

Given the high cost of English-language books and the limited selection, there is a lively market in second-hand books. Some of these stores will allow you to purchase a book and then sell it back to the store for a partial credit that can be applied to the next purchase.

Buying books online

Eva's Used Books offers used secular and Judaica titles for purchase.

You can also order books online from places like Amazon. Recent changes in Israeli customs laws allow people to import up to $250 worth of books from websites such as Amazon without being taxed by Israeli customs. According to an article in Haaretz on January 31, 2012, the Finance Minister raised the limit on personal imports free of import taxes to $75, up from $50, and abolished customs duty on packages worth between $75 and $325.

Bear in mind that shipping costs may be pricey, so consider buying from Amazon in the UK rather than Amazon in the US. In addition, Better World Books provides free shipping worldwide.

Similarly, the Book Depository in the UK offers free shipping worldwide.
